Grief has a way of making the world feel smaller.

After my husband Daniel passed away unexpectedly, every room in our home seemed filled with reminders of him. His reading glasses still sat beside his favorite chair. His unfinished crossword puzzle remained on the kitchen table. Even the coffee mug he forgot to wash before leaving for work felt impossible to move.

The phone call came while I was standing at the kitchen sink washing strawberries.

A state trooper informed me that Daniel had been involved in a serious car accident on his way to work.

There was nothing anyone could do.

Friends filled my house with casseroles and sympathy cards. Neighbors stopped by with kind words. Family members offered help.

Daniel’s younger brother, Greg, repeatedly asked about private papers, documents, and items stored in the garage.
